ROCHESTER, NY-- Second Avenue team members Emily Brenner Stump and Rebecca Ferraro collaboratively led a workshop with Professor Steve Jacobs on Gaming and STEM at Rochester Institute of Technology on April 23, 2011. The workshop was intended for local Girl Scouts in middle through high school. Emily and Rebecca discussed how girls traditionally out-perform their male peers in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) until around middle school age, at which point many young girls begin to develop confidence issues surrounding their abilities in STEM and choose alternate paths. Teachers, peers, and societal influences can all deter girls from the STEM disciplines, inhibiting future career paths for many talented individuals.

ROCHESTER, NY-- Second Avenue CEO Victoria Van Voorhis is a 2011 nominee for the Digital Rochester Technology Woman of the Year. Ms. Van Voorhis is one of 10 local women nominated for this year's award. Digital Rochester describes the award as something that is "designed to recognize, celebrate and make visible the achievements of women in high technology fields. Through this award, women who work in these professions are encouraged to stay in the Greater Rochester area, mentor young women, and contribute to the economic growth of the region." The award ceremony will take place at Locust Hill Country Club in Pittsford, NY on the morning of Thursday, April 28th from 7:30 am- 10:00 am.

ROCHESTER, NY-- Second Avenue Software celebrated its 5th Anniversary on April 6, 2011. To commemorate this important milestone, team members and friends of Second Avenue celebrated in style at the Strong National Museum of Play on Friday, April 8th. Festivities included a private tour of the International Center for the History of Electronic Games (ICHEG) archives, led by Eric Wheeler, curator of The Strong. Second Avenue CEO Victoria Van Voorhis spoke at the event about the progress of the company over the past 5 years, as well as goals for the future.

Second Avenue Develops MediaSCAN app for Lippincott

ROCHESTER, NY— Second Avenue developed an iOS app for Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, a division of Wolters Kluwer Health. The MediaSCAN app allows students to use an iOS device such as the iPhone to scan icons in specific Lippincott textbooks that link to custom video and audio files designed to enhance learning and student experience. Mobile access allows students the flexibility to learn on the go. The app was originally developed to complement a Lippincott Nursing textbook, for undergraduate level students.
