Second Avenue multimedia designs reflect the latest research on interactive media, pedagogy, and cognition. Mayer and Clark are recognized as thought leaders in research on effective multimedia for education and draw on expertise from the serious games field including James Gee and Kurt Squire. Second Avenue creates content and interactive media from a Constructivist background, believing that students create their own learning through play and experimentation. The lessons, materials, and media Second Avenue creates are designed to align with Bloom's Revised Taxonomy, which promotes higher level thinking skills. Second Avenue's work is pedagogically designed to be engaging and challenging but obtainable by all learners. Second Avenue believes that multimedia education should be fun because people learn best through play.

Second Avenue employs a backward design approach to serious game and educational multimedia design creation. This means that our learning designers use Common Core Standards and/or State Standards to create learning objectives and goals at the beginning of each project. The learning designers then work with the developers throughout the project timeline to ensure that learning opportunities are maximized. Our learning designers ask, “What do we want players to Know, Understand, and Be Able to Do by the end of this interactive?” Thinking backwards about the development process ensures that everything we make is designed to be pedagogically effective. At Second Avenue, we reimagine the learning process.

Rich Question Type queries prompt students to utilize higher-level thinking skills, and think outside the constraints of multiple choice prompts. Often students are not given the opportunity to actively engage in content and create their own meaning. When information is presented in a format that encourages an analytical approach, learning is enhanced. Early adoption of higher order thinking skills will also improve overall student outcomes, as such skills are integral for future secondary and post-secondary education and career success.

Second Avenue’s learning design team collaborates with our handpicked SMEs to offer a multitude of learning options. Students are able to receive positive feedback on their choices, which encourages them to take risks. This, in turn, encourages innovative learning.

Second Avenue is passionate about education. We employ educational best practices in all of our products. Second Avenue believes that differentiation in educational materials is a vital part of empowering every student to discover her or his full potential. Interactive multimedia education and serious games allow for customizable, unique educational experiences for students, making learning meaningful and lasting. Our products are scaffolded so that learning happens gradually, at a pace that is appropriate for each student; we present obtainable challenges that maximize learning. Second Avenue believes that differentiation and scaffolding allow students to create their own educational experience.
